"Levels" of Edition

August 14, 2000

The edition of Maurolico's works depends on transcriptions, editions, and studies that are being developed on them. The works are placed in the present website whenever their editing reach a level of refinement in accordance with the following criteria.

Level 0
A text can be placed in the site when it has reached a minimum level, corresponding to a carefully revised transcription made according to the general criteria of the edition.

Level 1
This level corresponds to a transcription collated with all witnesses of the text. The textual variants are located in the notes.

Level 2
It is the first level of real edition: the editor takes his/her own choices, suggests a stemma codicum, explicates the history and tradition of the text, and finally establishes a text of the work under scrutiny. It is a crucial point that, thanks to the electronic character of the edition, the editor will be able to reconsider the choices made, whenever his/her own or others studies or editions will bring to light new facts of some relevance to the problems at issue.

Level 3
The text is provided with links to a database of references: the reader will be able, when hitting upon references such as per quintam sexti Euclidis, to trace back the text of the Euclidean proposition referred to, both in the various versions available to Maurolico and in the elaborations of Maurolico himself (cross-references inside the corpus of the edition).

Level 4
A critical edition of the figures is prepared. Up to this level excluded, in fact, all figures will coincide with a single representative figure extracted from one among the manuscripts or printed editions collated.

When all texts will have reached level 4, the editors and the coordinators of the several volumes in which the corpus is partitioned will start a final, refining work of reciprocal confronting. The outcomes will be a traditional, printed edition and another electronic edition in CD-rom.
